A couple days ago I was invited to a "wealth-building" seminar. When I took my seat, I sat and beheld a young man in his late 20's give a very strong and competent presentation ... about a product called Tahitian Noni Juice. To see this brother do his thing, you'd think that it was the cure to everything short of death and damn near endorsed by God.
Then he got to the gusto! He boldly said, "THIS IS NOT A PYRAMID!" after which he showed on the screen a diagram that looked incredibly triangular! He ran down all the different "levels" involved based on how much money one could make based upon how many people they brought in and the people they brought in. He then got to the close where he flashed across the "start-up" costs and ended the presentation with the opportunity to speak with him and the other "associates" and sign right up in order to learn more.
At that point, my host scooped me up and out of the room, and he told me while he was affiliated with the company, he was not directly affiliate with the staff hosting that meeting.
He then put his "sugar" on it all by showing me the checks he's made for his dedicated involvement for the past two months. They weren't enough to buy a house or car - or even make a mortage payment or car note, but the few extra dollars as they were I'm sure helped his household a little as every little bit helps.
I thanked him for his invitation, but informed him that I'm not suited for that business as I'm already building my own business. I drove home that evening talking to my wife on the phone - all the way up until coming in the house - explaining to her how it all went. WE LAUGHED A LOT!
How many times has a friend called you and invited you to a meeting about "a new business opportunity" that was going to make you some serious money, but when you asked them to explain it further they danced around doing so by encouraging you to come to the meeting so that you could hear about the "business" from someone better suited to explain it fully? Then when you get to the meeting they tell you how bad the economy is and how you're going to stay at the bottom of the economic ladder if you don't actively do something to change it.
WELL HERE COMES ... "THEIR PRODUCT & THEIR PROGRAM"
In the end, I feel I can honestly say that if you've seen one multi-level marketing "business" you've seen them all, and ever since I was introduced to this "industry" back in 1989 and all of the various businesses within it ... I have yet to meet one person who has made all of the money that was promised to be made at those meetings ... Not one friend has stopped by the house in the Ferrari that was in the meeting video. Not one friend has invited me to his new 8 bedroom house on 10 acres.
In the end, if you're going to succed in building a business, you're going to have to create and or improve a viable product or service. You can't get something for nothing.
