I decided that since I was sitting here in front of my computer (like I do everyday), I would research a few terms that have been on my mind for a while now. I Googled the words "Conservative" & the word "Liberal," and I was floored by what I learned! I learned that by definition, I would be considered a "Conservative!
According to Your Guide to Conservative Politics by Amy Hess, "conservatives believe two basic things are important for keeping America strong: morality and responsibility." DAMN ... I BELIEVE IN THAT. She goes on to say, "Conservatives believe Americans should help each other, but that society should not look to the government to solve all of its problems." YUP!
"Conservatives see the government as big and wasteful, and government programs too often reward immoral or irresponsible behavior." CHECK!
"Conservatives believe that the government should keep a tight budget, and government programs - if they exist at all - should help people get strong and independent so that they do not need further government assistance." I'M THERE!
I am a very big believer in accountability. If I need help my government should be there to help me, but only to the extent that I can get back up on my own two feet. In other words, I believe that government should exist to help us carry the load, not carry it for us. As a people (and I mean the entire human race), I believe that we should carry our own weight, and be kind enough to help others to the point where they can carry their own.
HOWEVER ...
As I sit here at my desk typing this blog entry, I just got through watching The O'Reilly Report and now Hannity & Colmes is on. There ain't no way I can be in league with those clowns! Ultimately, I may have conservative beliefs, but I am not blinded by it and I do believe that there is so much hypocrisy prevalent in our society that we cannot really tell if we're coming or going!
On the flipside, I do hold some beliefs that border on the liberal side. I believe in freedom, but I also believe in law and order. As a veteran, I know first hand that freedom ain't free! I believe that people should be free to live their lives as they choose, but that does not mean I have to accept having a disagreeable lifestyle forced upon me. I believe that people should be free to disagree with the government if the government is screwing up. After all the government is made up of human beings. Ascending to a certain title does not grant one a cloak of infallibility.
I believe in setting high goals and living up to high standards. I believe in reveling in my successes and accepting my role in my setbacks. In the end, I am not afraid of how holding these beliefs are synonymous to being a so-called "Conservative."
Let me ask you this ...
What are you if you believe in one God, and you submit your will to that of His?
By definition ... you're a muslim!
Cogitate on that for a few!
