Today I did something that I did not think I would be doing so early in my career as a public/motivational speaker.
Today I conducted my very first seminar for a management organization that provides leadership training for the AT&T corporation called "Teaching New Thinking," or "TNT" for short. The "TNT" community is comprised of managers and executives within the AT&T corporation all across the country.
Today's seminar was a tele-seminar (similar to a conference call) that was promoted in all three time zones and there were close to 100 participants who were logged in from all across the country.
Several months ago, Fl. Antuane Brown, one of my (Groove Phi Groove SFI.®) brothers asked me if he could include my name in a survey as someone his company should look to have conduct seminars. I gave him my blessing ("no-brainer" there) and to my surprise, the president of "TNT," Chyrell English, contacted me personally - first by e-mail, then next by phone - to set me up to conduct a seminar. Mrs. English promoted this seminar far and wide within the AT&T/T&T community, and as a result, in the days leading up to today's seminar and even afterwards, I received a good number of requests for autographed copies of my book "FIND A WAY TO MAKE A WAY! You're Either Part of the Problem or You're Part of the Solution."
The seminar went GREAT! I got really nervous when I first opened the line for questions and no one said anything. I really thought I was bombing, but what had actually begun happening was that people were submitting their questions via instant message to Mrs. English who then began shooting the questions to me ... and there were plenty of questions!
When the seminar was over and everone disconnected from the conference line, Mrs. English called me right back (from California by the way) and assured me that I had done a tremendous job. She also informed me that as we were talking she was receiving an influx of e-mails and instant messages of nothing but positive feedback - so much so to the point where they have asked me to (1) do another seminar next month, and (2) be a guest speaker when they conven their National "TNT" Conference Tour next year!
Despite the obstacles am I fighting and overcoming in my life, there are so many blessings that are coming down upon me that I can't quite figure out what God's plan for me is! I guess all I can do is keep striving to improve myself through reading, praying, and putting in the work necessary to face every new day with more optimism than the day before ... sepecially when that next coming day hits you smack-dab in the face with more crap than the day before!
When I informed my manager/advisor of what I had done today, she was - well - surprised for one thing; next she was of corse extremely proud and very much impressed. She emphatically assured me that to be a motivational speaker approached and then "re-requested" by AT&T is definitely a good notch to add to my speaker's resume! It is definitely a "Power Move!"
What power moves are you capable of making if you just put in the right mixture of determination, faith and elbow grease into it? When you look at people who are successful ... not just those born into wealth, but those who actually earned their success and made it happen for themselves, you will also find that they achieved that success by making power moves. They did so by making connections.
The acquisition of Success is not for the weak at heart ... It is not for the shy or otherwise introverted. If you want to be successful, you have to get up off your bottom and learn how to shake some hands and carry on conversations ... even if you must start those conversations yourself!
Of this, I am living proof ... and my journey is just beginning!
